Automation & The Future of Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia Is China All Over Again…Only Better!
Southeast Asia is China from the 1990s, only this time technology has been added to the mix:
Low-end value-added manufacturing is migrating from China to Southeast Asia… while high-end robotics and automation tools are coming along with it…while Southeast Asia is exporting billions more dollars in trade north to China, Korea, and Japan…while China, Korea, and Japan are wooing Southeast Asia’s 640 million consumers…while Southeast Asian governments are pouring billions of investment dollars into infrastructure and lavish tax breaks to ramp up for transformation.
It’s the beginning of a happy cycle of events. A place where both low-cost, labor-intensive manufacturing coexists (maybe for a few decades or so) with high-end robotics, automation and AI.

SMEs account for 96 percent of all businesses (both manufacturing and logistics) and 58 percent of all jobs. The market for robots, especially collaborative robots in the $15,000 to $30,000 range, is virtually limitless across the ASEAN and, as yet, virtually untapped.
The better-off ASEAN countries, those with infrastructures that are well-established like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines, will need to initially anchor the AEC while Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Vietnam, and Myanmar play catch up.
Catch up could be quick, even for a country just starting to industrialize like Myanmar, which jumped its clothing exports from $700 million to $1.7 billion from 2011 to 2014. Or Vietnam, which shipped $8 billion in electronics in 2008, then $32 billion in 2018.
Many thanks in the preparation of this research report go out to Asian Robotics Review’s Southeast Asia advisor, Dr. Djitt Laowattana, Founder & Director of Institute of Field Robotics, King Mongkut’s University of Technology, Thonburi, Thailand.
Dr. Laowattana’s experience and expertise offers our many readers and visitors unparalleled insight into the forward direction of robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence at the epicenter of the Fourth Industrial Revolution—Asia!
“My effort is to push business awareness of this sector, and my dream is coming true.
I have created a fundamental infrastructure, which is ready now, and this sector needs
a new generation of experts to push robotics down the runway and take off for the new era.”
